Collared Elephant Report - May 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 31 May 2008

African Conservation Fund has been helping to raise funds for elephant research in the Tanzania-Kenya borderlands. Last year we reported on the first collared elephant, named Lorna, and the wealth of information she is providing through a special GPS-equipped tracking collar.

We just received this report from the GIS team at African Conservation Centre in Nairobi, confirming that Lorna and her herd are preferring the community-established Game Reserve in the Olkiramatian-Shompole region of the South Rift.

"We are gearing ourselves for another round of collaring in June, hopefully of two bulls and one more female. We wanted to update you on how Lorna was doing almost 2 years after being collared. Peter has put together the attached images of Lornas movement for the periods January to March 2008, and for the Month of April 08.  We will be looking into analyzing various attributes of her movement as the database builds up.
Regards
The GIS team, African Conservation Centre"

Special thanks to the Searle/Branham family for donating the funds for one of the new collars.
