What better way to experience the incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and fascinating cultures of East Africa than on an exclusive safari with the African Conservation Fund and our partner, the African Conservation Centre?
We offer completely unique conservation safaris in Kenya that visit not only the famous reserves like Amboseli and Masai Mara but also special project areas in pastoralist lands that are not open to general tourism.
You become an active partner in the innovative community-based
projects that we support. You become part of something big - an
international community working to protect one of the most special
places on Earth.
We offer three different safari experiences.
Each type of safari will give you special insight into Africa's
animals, people, and conservation efforts - up close and personal, under
the guidance of researchers, experienced guides, and local escorts from the communities.
Adventure Conservation Safaris
Departures (leaving from and returning to Nairobi):
February 19 - March 4, 2008
July 17 - 30, 2008
(September 2 - 16, 2008) tentative
February 17 - March 3, 2009
Cost: Approx. $5,500 per person based on 2 people per vehicle.
Looking for true adventure?
We are taking applications now for adventurers to help us
pioneer a new overland route from the Maasai Mara to Amboseli National
Park through the borderlands of Kenya and Tanzania. Participants will
drive their own safari-outfitted Toyota HiLux (provided) . . . see Africa the way you've always dreamed.
Entirely
in Maasailand, accompanied by members of the Maasai conservation group,
the South Rift Association, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity.
If you hate driving rugged trails in wild,
beautiful landscapes, if you don't like seeing spectacular wildlife
like elephants and lions and cheetahs or meeting legendary cultures
like the Maasai - if you think adventure is a channel on cable, then
PLEASE DON'T APPLY.
For more details and costs, please download our PDF flyer here, and an application form here.
Note
that this is not a first-come basis; rather, participants will be
chosen based on 4WD driving skills, experience, and willingness to be a
working member of an adventure team. Note:
Space is limited, and applications are coming in weekly. After
selection for a safari, deposits will be due or space will be forfeit.
Please email or call with any questions. U.S. telephone: 520.591.1410
Discovery Conservation Safaris
Departures (leaving from and returning to Nairobi):
January 30 - February 10, 2008
June 1 -14, 2008 - tentative
Custom dates also possible
Cost: TBD
Our Discovery safaris focus on education
and unique experiences. Each safari will be different, but all will
include expert guides and hosts, guest lecturers, and plenty of time
with representatives from Maasai and other communities whose
conservation work we support.
Activities may include:
- Walking among wildlife with Maasai guides and ecologists from African Conservation Centre, local or international universities.
- Enjoying lively lectures on subjects such as savanna ecology, animal behavior, cultural traditions, and much more.
Walking with a troop of baboons that has been
specially habituated for conservation education; we are the first to
offer this unique opportunity, pioneered by renowned primatologist Dr.
Shirley Strum, who has been studying olive baboons in the Rift Valley
for nearly 30 years.
- Tracking elephants using satellite collars with ACC scientists.
- Seeing the savannas and wildlife through the eyes of the Maasai on a cattle walk.
- Learning about Maasai cultural life at a traditional boma, and a traditional Maasai dance and meat-feast.
Safaris will be a mix of luxury camping
and stays at the best lodges, taking in Amboseli National Park, Maasai
Mara National Reserve, the southern Rift Valley lakes and Nguruman
Escarpment, and the Laikipia Plateau. Transportation between locations
will be by light aircraft, and game viewing and community visits will
be by safari-equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles for your comfort.
Each safari will round out with a look at the conservation efforts of
the community and partners such as African Conservation Centre and
African Conservation Fund, including wildlife sanctuaries, community
scouts, ecotourism programs and plans to balance conservation and
development.
Please email or call with any questions. U.S. telephone: 520.591.1410
